I feel pretty lucky that I was able to find time in the semester for a trip. It seems crazy to think that I went to a whole other country and came back in only 4 days. The US is so big and Indiana is right in the middle of it so traveling to another country seems like it should be a much longer trip than that. But here in Korea, I'm only 2 hours from China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. It's so interesting to be so close to so many other countries.
So, about the trip. Shannon, Soo Young, and I met up at the airport early Friday morning and headed out. The flight was only two hours and we were in Taiwan before lunch. As we were coming out of the airport we could see tons of palm
After shopping and eating Shannon and I split off to do some exploring on our own and then met back up with the others that evening to go to the Night Market. The first part of the night market was the food section. Honestly, it was a bit overwhelming. A food favorite in Taiwan is "Stinky Tofu" and it lives up to its name. They also had hot dogs that were the size of my forearm, no exaggeration! As a vegetarian, it was a bit difficult to find something to eat, but I did find a great fruit juice vender that made fresh fruit juice as you ordered it. Very refreshing and delicious. The rest of the night market had trendy clothes and accessories and various other things. The most interesting part was to see how different the trends and styles in Korea and Taiwan are. In Western culture it is so easy to lump all of the Eastern Asian countries together and assume they are the same. But, when you really spend time in their cultures you see how vastly different they are. (Not saying I'm an expert on Taiwan now, but in a matter of a few days I saw a lot of differences between their culture and Korean culture.)
On Saturday, I Hwie had to teach so Soo Young went to school with here and Shannon and I headed out in the city on our own. The subway system was super easy to use. The only hard part was trying to remember not to drink anything on there. They have a strict rule about drinking or eating in the Subway system. You can bring whatever you like on the train, but you cannot eat or drink. But it seemed like every time we got on the subway was the first time I had had the chance to sit down in quite sometime and I always wanted to take a drink of water. It was so hard to remember, but it was really cool how everyone obeyed the rule. But, luckily Shannon has a better memory than I do and helped me remember.
Anyway, having an easy subway system made it easy for us to get around. So we went to a temple we had heard about that morning. It was so beautiful. In Taiwan, the version of buddhism is
After spending some time in the temple we went to I Hwei's university and met up with her, Soo young, and I Hwei's boyfriend and drove to Yehliu. Yeihliu is a coastal town
Shortly after that we drove further north to Danshui which Soo Young really wanted to see. It is a little up and coming coastal town that has a bit of an artistic feel to it. Apparently a Korean drama was filmed there. Soo Young seemed like she was in a dream as she looked at the place where the drama was filmed. For me, the best part was the little paths that were lit up with little red lanterns. There was such a cool vibe as all of these very modern looking people walked around these very ancient looking side streets. Also, we ate in a restaurant with an open window overlooking the sea. We could feel the sea breeze and see mountains, churches, houses, and many other things. It was breathtaking and beautiful.

On Sunday, Shannon and I met Soo young and I Hwei at an up and coming district in Taipei. With them we got to check out the traditional area of the town. There were little eateries serving traditional foods and souvenirs. After a few hours we split up and Shannon and I found the cool modern district along the boardwalk where we sipped coffee while hanging our feet out of an open windowed, second story cafe and just reveled in the coolness of the trip so far. We decided we wanted to try and find a cool place to eat for the evening. Some place were we could sit back and drink wine and relax. This turned out to be a bit of a challenge. By the time we got back into the city and to an area with nice restaurants we realized it was too late. Most of the restaurants close at 10 and it was pretty close to 10 so they weren't taking orders. After going to about 5 or 6 places and being turned away we were forced to fall back on TGI Fridays...which turned out okay. It was just funny to be eating at an American chain while staying in Taiwan. But we definitely had our wine!
Monday, our last day, Shannon and I decided to go to the peace memorial that honors the victims of the massacre of 1947-when the Chinese government came to Taiwan and killed several thousand people. It was beautiful and amazing to see how countries that face huge tragedies like that can overcome them and embrace peace. Shannon was starting to regret that she hadn't taken a better picture of the Taipei 101 building so we set out to try and get one before we had to meet up with Soo Young and I Hwei at 12:30. We ended up being so lucky. We found this cool department store/bookstore with a great view. We got our picture and even had time left over for a bit of shopping. We ate our last meal at a great new restaurant that had delicious dumplings (Shannon says the pork dumplings are unbelievably good. I just tried the veggie ones and they were pretty good). We also had lettuce wraps that were amazing and an asparagus and shrimp stir fry. All of the food was beyond delicious. A great way to end the trip.
I had such a great time there. I met great people and saw so many beautiful things.
